The CEO of DIGI in Spain, Marius Varzaru, said on Thursday that the investment made by the company over the past eight years has enabled it to “create value” around its purpose: “to deliver connectivity within everyone’s reach”.

Varzaru made these remarks at the DigitalES Summit forum, where he stressed that the investment effort made since 2018, reaching 12.5 million households with its fibre network, has enabled the operator to reach more than 2.1 million fibre customers and an additional 5.7 million mobile customers, many of whom have been attracted by its convergent offering.

He also highlighted that the deployment of XGSPON technology, available across 93% of DIGI’s fibre network coverage, combined with its competitive pricing, means that four out of five customers choose its own fibre network and that at least 25% of its new customers are new to the market, having had no access to fibre services in the three months prior to joining the company.

Direct employment, a strategic pillar of DIGI’s business model

Varzaru also highlighted that the creation of more than 9,300 jobs at the company over the past eight years stems from its vertical integration strategy, which allows it to maintain close control over service quality and costs, all for the benefit of its customers.

He also pointed out that DIGI, the second-largest operator by number of employees, currently has more than 9,500 people directly employed by the company and expects to reach 10,000 employees by the end of the year.

Future plans

The CEO also outlined the company’s investment outlook for the coming years, reaffirming its commitment to invest €2 billion over the 2024–2030 period.

This investment will be aimed at completing its FTTH network rollout to reach 20 million households with Smart fibre, even before the end of that period, and will also support the deployment of mobile masts with DIGI coverage, with a target of reaching 5,000 over the next three years and ultimately 10,000 in the future.

In conclusion, Varzaru called for reflection on “the importance of ensuring a balanced regulatory environment in order to continue promoting investment and job creation”.
